Not to be left behind, scene stalwarts Crashdïet have come up with their new album, 'Generation Wild' and for the third time this year the Scandinavian scene has kicked my ass again.<br /><br />With the departure of their second vocalist H. Olliver Twisted (to aforementioned Reckless Love) Crashdïet enlisted new vocalist Simon Cruz. Filling the shoes of the great late Dave Lepard would be an overwhelming task for anyone but Simon handles vocal duties with the ease of a man that's doing it for many years. His voice is closer to Dave's rasping vocal style than Twisted's but he brings enough on the table to sound like his own man and not a Lepard rip-off.<br /><br />The album opens with police sirens as if giving an indication to the chaos that will follow. 'Armaggedon' kicks off things with it's chugga-chugga rhythm and huge soaring chorus. 'So Alive' features 'Shout at the Devil'-era esque riffage but with a more melodic chorus. The title track is an amazing piece of music and probably the best track of the album. Energetic, melodic and pure fun - that's how you could describe this scorcher of a song. 'Save Her' slows things up and is a welcome addition to the album as it lends some variety to the album. 'Down with the Dust' has a more of a "traditional" NWOBHM-ish metal feel to it. 'Chemical' and 'Bound to Fall' are nice melodic poppy rockers, kind off like Bon Jovi during their heaviest. A great album to add to the band's resume and highly recommended for fans of the Sunset Strip scene. Now waiting for another band from Sweden to blow my brains out.<br /><br />Highlight-<br />The title track. Melodic crunchy riffage during the choruses, more laid back in-the-background guitar parts during the verses, a huge chorus and to top it off - a brilliant solo by axeman Martin Sweet. The lyrics are all about breaking the chains of this boring conformist life we've become comfartable in and revel in the joy of anarchy. Based on the Source Engine (the same engine behind modern day classics Half-Life 2 and Left 4 Dead), Zeno Clash is a first person action game with heavy emphasis on melee combat. Think of a cross between FPSs and traditional fighting games (Street Fighter, Tekken etc) and you have Zeno Clash. </div><div><br />The game is set in the fictional fantasy world of Zenozoik. Zenozoik is a very weird and organic looking world which reminded me a lot of the locales in Planescape Torment. Throughout the 5-6 hours you'll take to complete the game you are in control of Ghat, a young man who is on the run from his siblings after he kills their hermaphroditic parent, a creature known as Father-Mother. Throughout your adventure you are accompanied by a female companion named Daedra.<br /><br />Some of the levels take place in flashback sequences while others focus on the misadventures during their travels. Certain areas involve fighting sequences like those in traditional fighting games, except in first person. You have to defeat a certain no of enemies to proceed further. Throughout the game you obtain various unconventional melee and ranged weapons. But plenty of water has flown under the bridge since the release of that game and the first person shooter has evolved into a different beast. Regenerating health, a fixed number of weapons at a time and improved cover system are only some of the changes the FPS has seen since then. 2009's Wolfenstein combines a bit of the new with the old to give a real good old-school FPS with a modern touch.<br /><br />The story's decent, nothing to much write about. You get to play as returning protagonist from the previous game, B.J Blazkowicz. Blazkowicz comes across a mysterious medallion possessing great power on one of his missions. During a meeting in the OSA headquarters, he learns that the medallion needs crystals called Nachtsonne, found only in a German town called Isenstadt, to utilise its full power and that the leader of the excavation is a Nazi general named Victor Zetta. Blazkowicz is sent to Isenstadt undercover. Isenstadt acts as a base of operations and you can roam about the town visiting different shops and hide-outs to purchas upgrades for your weapon or medallion or to get quests. Nazi patrols walk the streets of the town so it gives a very authentic feel to the whole 'Nazi occupied town' bit. You are assisted by the Kreisau Circle, an underground German group against the Nazis and the Golden Dawn, a group of Russian scholars who specialise in the occult.<br /><br />One unique feature is the Veil, a sort of barrier between two dimensions which Blazkowicz can enter due to the medallion. Being in this mode increases your speed and makes you see weak spots in the enemy. Acquiring further crystals for the medallion lets you slow down time, protect yourself with a shield and empower your weapons.<br /><br />The boss fights are amazing and really well thought out with clever gameplay mechanics. The single player campaign feels kind of boring and generic in the beginning but quickly picks up pace and the later levels rank up with those of the best FPSs. Escaping from a facility about to get blown up to finding an assassin in a hospital who keeps killing the doctors and the patients, the later levels are very well designed.<br /><br />Multiplayer contains three multiplayer modes: Team Deathmatch, Objective, and Stopwatch. Team Deathmatch finds players fighting to gain a certain number of kills, Objective finds them trying to defend and attack targets, and in Stopwatch players must complete objectives in a set period of time. The player can select from three classes: Soldier, Medic, and Engineer. It was unlike anything I had played before and for a hardcore rock/metal fan like me the game was like a dream come true. With a killer setlist heavily bent towards the harder side of rock it succeeded in making me spend hundreds of hours playing the same songs trying to notch up higher scores and better note streaks.<br /><br />World Tour does not present me with the same kind of enthusiasm as Guitar Hero has become a familiar quantity for me but it's a killer game in it's own right. World Tour features full bandplay this time around so all those disgruntled bassists, drummers and vocalists who thought video game developers are biased towards the guitar have plenty of reasons to rejoice.<br /><br />You can select existing characters returning from the previous games or go ahead and make your very own rockstar. This rockstar creation mode is very flexible allowing you to fully customize your player character's hairstyles, clothes, tattoos etc. So you want a guy with a punk mohawk, a black metal warrior vest and glam metal tight pants and high heels? It's just a couple of clicks and you have it. This feature is plenty of fun and I spent plenty of time just tweaking my player character. On one gig I even had my character dressed up as an Indian <span style="font-style: italic;">sadhu</span> with a tiger tattoo.<br /><br />Even instruments are fully customizable in this way and you can spend a lot of time just checking out how different fretboard designs and guitar body shapes look with each other.<br /><br />The songs are divided into gigs out of which a couple remain unlocked and completing these gigs result in further gigs being unlocked. The setlist is varied and everyone should find something they like here. For classic rock afficiandos there's songs like 'American Woman' and 'Band on the Run'. Indie rockers can jam to Modest Mouse's 'Float On' and a couple of other popular indie tracks. Bioware to me is what the Beatles were to rock fans in the 60s, Led Zep in the 70s, Metallica in the 80s... you get the point. They are nothing less than gods from my viewpoint. Devouring every title of theirs since the first Neverwinter Nights, the yearly Bioware release is one of the high points of the year for me. So forgive me if I'm a bit biased.<br /><br />Looking at Dragon Age, you can tell Bioware had only one thing in their mind - 'Old School'. Gone is the behind-the-shoulders perspective employed since KOTOR to be replaced by a top-down perspective reminiscent to those used in the late 90s classics by Bioware and Black Isle.<br /><br />You begin the game in one of the six origin stories which serve as an introductory point and acts as a prologue of sorts. The origin story chosen determines who the character is and how NPCs react to the you (I chose Human noble). After the origins story you are recruited by Duncan, a member of an elite force called the Grey Wardens who are responsible for battling darkspawn, foul demons who lurk underground and make regular forays into the surface world. This serves as the background for the epic adventure that follows.<br /><br />The entire game will take around 60-70 hours to complete if you decide to do most of the side quests. Like most Bioware games the main quest is divided into a number of sections spread in different parts of the land. Each place involves further tasks to complete which lead you to completing the respective part of the main quest.<br /><br />The story is well paced and engrossing but what makes it such a delight are the amazing cast of recruitable NPCs. They are a varied lot from the homosexual Elven assassin Zevran to the 'amazingly beautiful but gives an evil vibe' Morrigan to the jolly templar-turned -grey warden Alistair. You can't help but break into a smile when you hear the conversations between different NPCs. A particularly memorable one involved the alcoholic dwarve Oghren asking the shapshifter Morrigan if she had changed shape during having sex. The conversation that follows is a riot.<br /><br />There's a brand new tactics system which lets you effectively control your party's AI by making specific what actions to take at what points of time and is a real help in the more messier fights.<br /><br />Bioware have been the standard setters for computer RPGs for a long time now and Dragon Age: Origins fully lives up to the expectations. Breaking games sales records since day one it is the darling of both hardcore gamers like yours truly and casual gamers (think college kids and yuppies). But separating the game from the legend, how well does it fare?<br /><br />The single player campaign puts you mostly in the shoes of Sergeant Gary "Roach" Sanderson, a member of an elite, multi-national commando unit known as Task Force 141 serving under "Soap" MacTavish (the protagonist from the first MW game) . You also play as a number of different characters throughout the campaign. The campaign is quite short, clocking in at 6-7 hours. The plot is also a bit fuzzy and muddled. But throughout the duration of the campaign you will be hooked to the screen. Brilliant inventive level design coupled with spectacular over-the-top set pieces that only a Call of Duty game can have makes the single player experience a lot of fun. One of the things I really liked was that some of the levels made me fell like playing one of the World War II games. These levels had suppressing fire from machine gun nests, buildings breaking down all around - staples of the WWII games. So the game does a nice job of melding both old and new.<br /><br />Spec-Ops is a new mode concentrating on co-op gameplay and here is where the game really shines. It consists of stand-alone missions sort of like the bonus mission in the original game. All of these scenarios support two-player gameplay, either connected locally or online.<br /><br />Multiplayer is basically the same which is a good thing as MW has the best multiplayer in the world. There is the same experience points/rewards system with new weapons, equipments and perks. There are also 15 different kill streak rewards can be unlocked and selected by the player. Among these is the ability to receive a supply drop after achieving four kills in a row, order a Predator missile strike after five kills, and call in an AC-130 gunship to strike from the sky after 11 kills.<br /><br />This game will end up in plenty of 'Top 10 Games of the Year' lists (as it should) and is a brilliant add-on to a great series.
